Emilia Korsak, a doctoral candidate at the Department of Clinical Psychology, Development and Education at UWM, and the head of the university's Psychophysiology Laboratory, has set herself an ambitious research task – to use biofeedback technology in the prevention of eating disorders. In her scientific project, Korsak utilizes our Aidmed One band to better understand the genesis and therapy of eating disorders.

Project Goal

The goal of the scientific project was to create the Nalu. Mindful Movement prevention program based on bodywork methods and to assess its effectiveness. As Emilia emphasizes in her report, bodywork methods are a relatively new area in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders, requiring deeper understanding.

Research on the role of the body-mind connection in treatment effectiveness and therapies based on bodywork methods has only recently been conducted, although they have been used in clinical practice for many years. The conducted experiments aimed to prove effectiveness on a subjective level (based on psychological parameters) and an objective level (based on psychophysiological studies).

Control group

Translating information from the language of practice to the language of scientific research, gathering information covering clinical observations, interviews, measurements with appropriate tools, and a thorough and comprehensive description of observations constitute a significant contribution to the science of eating disorders.

Using Wearable Equipment for Research

Aidmed One allows for remote monitoring of parameters such as breathing frequency and heart rate variability, which reflect a range of physiological processes but also indicate changes in the activity of both branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).

Studies have shown that the state of heart coherence has a positive impact not only on physical processes but also on our emotions, mental balance, and composure.

Study Results

Thanks to monitoring physiological parameters with the Aidmed One chest band and analyzing psychometric results, researchers were able to discover that the Nalu. Mindful Movement method influenced:

  • Increase in HRV.
  • Increase in interoceptive awareness.
  • Improvement in self-esteem.
  • Improvement in mood.
  • Reduction in anxiety levels.
  • Reduction in stress levels.
  • Reduction in body dissatisfaction.

Impact on the Community

The project's results have been widely discussed in the scientific community and among practitioners, and have also contributed to increased interest in tools for remote monitoring of physiological parameters.

Looking at the results of our studies, I see a real change in the lives of participants. What really makes a difference is the ability to observe how small steps in working on oneself translate into their well-being and mental health

Using our equipment in this type of research opens up new possibilities for psychologists, educators, and parents who want to support individuals in the process of healthily coping with emotional difficulties and stress.
